The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh

Creative freelancers and people in the advertising industry know all about baseless feedback. What feels like a great and fresh idea is pitched to a client, only for it to be met with negative and unreasonably critical responses that take the soul out of the concept. The Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) is aware that not even the best creators out there are safe from this. Even people like Vincent van Gogh and Frida Kahlo would be met with skepticism had they ever tried their hand at advertising. Two clever videos commissioned by AICP imagine how these two iconic painters would deal with client feedback—something many creatives can relate to.

Directed by O Positive’s Brian Billow and created by agency BBDO, the clips were released ahead of the 2024 AICP Awards deadline of March 12, which is celebrating “museum-worthy” ideas. Fittingly, the winners of the competition will join the film archive of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. These funny ads for the 2024 Awards are aptly captioned with the tagline: “It's hard to make museum-worthy art. It's even harder to make museum-worthy ads.”

The Museum-Worthy video brings contemporary advertising drama to Van Gogh's studio. Dressed up in period clothing, two account executives approach the artist with their biggest smiles to relay the news: “The client loved the painting.” They're talking about The Starry Night, but that's not the end of the feedback. “They just found it a little, um, dark.” They then ask the Dutch artist if he could paint a “sunny day” instead, but keep the title because the client loves it. Of course, this completely changes the concept and the intention behind Van Gogh's work. It seems like an absurdist suggestion…but many creatives, especially those in advertising, can surely relate to this.

The video then makes a shift to 1930s Mexico, and Frida Kahlo is getting comments on her Self-portrait with monkey. Turns out one of the junior clients found the forehead area “off-putting and confrontational,” while the CMO's husband—a foreign entity to the process—simply didn't get it, making it “unrelatable.” Things don't get better for either of them. Van Gogh's painting failed with a focus group—”How can a painting fail?” he asks—so an 19th-century influencer with “a ton of followers” (aka a priest) is brought in. The Focus Group video goes into detail as to what went down with the focus group, who drag the painting in every possible way. Meanwhile, Kahlo gets suggestions for her self-portrait. Why not change the monkey for puppies? “People trust puppies,” says one of the execs, followed by another's supportive “It's proven.”

The whole exchange between the account executives and the creatives is hilarious and spot on. In fact, we dare say they are “museum-worthy.” Scroll down to watch both of these painfully funny videos below.

The Association of Independent Commercial Producers imagined what it'd look like if Vincent van Gogh and Frida Kahlo had to deal with client feedback the way ad creatives do today.

One of their clips shows a period focus group—one of the advertising world's favorite tools—dragging Van Gogh's The Starry Night in every possible way.

According to the World Health Organization, there are 236,000 annual drowning deaths worldwide. That's why every second counts when rescuing someone from a body of water. While donut-shaped lifesavers are key to bringing people to safety, Noras Performance, a Portugal-based company has brought this invaluable object to the 21st century, likely saving countless lives. U SAFE is a remote-controlled, U-shaped lifesaving device that can reach a person in distress in no time.

The company describes their lifebuoy as a “self-propelled, remotely controllable system designed to be a fast and accurate ‘aquatic robot.'” To facilitate the rescue, it allows people to use it intuitively, allowing anyone in the vicinity to grab the remote and launch the lifesaver—working even in challenging conditions such as bad weather or strong currents.

The U SAFE can even be tossed from above, as it resists drops up to 98 feet. It can later reach a speed of up to 9.3 miles per hour and operate for 40 minutes—meaning it'll have enough power to tow the victim back to the ship or the shore. The only requirement is that it needs the cooperation of a conscious victim for a successful rescue.

The lifebuoy can work on whatever side it lands on, activating itself instantly when deployed. To keep the person being rescued safe, its design prevents it from being flipped by the waves thanks to its double turbine engine. Being able to control it from afar makes it a priceless resource for rescues in tough-to-reach spots and cold weather. This could also prevent additional tragedies that may occur when a victim latches onto a human rescuer and may push them down in a moment of panic.

This clever invention has won many accolades, like being named Honoree in the Human Security for All category at the CES 2023 Innovation Awards. But above all, it has been tested and praised by those who have to face and perform this kind of rescue as part of their jobs, from lifeguards and ship captains to members of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Navy. Redningsselskapet, an organization dedicated to assist people on the Norwegian coastline even used it to tow a small boat—a testament to the power of this device and the many ways it can save lives.

Stunning Stained Glass Tableware Shines in a Myriad of Colors at the Dining Table

When we think of stained glass, it's most likely the big, colorful windows of cathedrals and palaces that come to mind. But a company called Chrysolite Workshop proves this decorative technique can also be applied to much smaller and ordinary objects, like cutlery, cups, and plates, all while keeping the same amount of detail. The result is stained glass tableware that belongs in a museum rather than the dining table.

The designers spotlight their creations—as well as the laborious process behind them—on Instagram and TikTok. There, a ritzy parade of utensils shine in a myriad of colors. As if the intricate nature of their work wasn't impressive enough, the fact that it is featured on such tiny objects makes it all the more commendable.

“We create precious tableware using stained glass enamel technique,” shares Chrysolite Workshop on their site. “This is painstaking manual labor that requires jewelry craftsmanship—for example, to create a ladle based on Russian fairy tales it took us four months of work, seven master jewelers, a team of artists, two jewelry technicians, as well as 200 meters of silver wire weighing 100 grams, 17 colors of enamel and fiery stoves.”

These beautiful pieces come alive thanks to the work of 40 artisans, including metal and enamel artists, engravers, and carvers. “Even in the 21st century we haven’t become ‘fashionable' because we still do everything with our hands!” writes the Chrysolite Workshop team.

Like many works of art, this fine dinnerware begins with a sketch, before approaching the color composition and creating an enamel palette and grinding quartz to obtain the colors. The piece then goes to the metal artist, who builds the frame using silver filigree. “In a simplified form, the process of creating filigree looks like this: a wire with a diameter of 0.21 mm is drawn from a block of silver in the process of rolling and drawing,” the company explains.

Then, the enamel artists applies the color into each cell of the scanned pattern using a jewelry spatula, making sure it doesn't get on the filigree. Once that is done, the piece makes a trip to the muffle furnace to seal the color, before getting a final polish and a galvanic bath. “And as you can see, this is far from an easy, painstaking work that requires professionalism and talent,” Chrysolite Workshop shares. “But this doesn’t stop us at all; on the contrary, it encourages us to create more and more new, complex, original and interesting things.”

If you'd like to get one of these intricate works, Chrysolite Workshop has an online store where you can find tea sets, glasses, bowls, teaspoons, and ladles. However, they recently stated that they've been having issues with shipping overseas due to the precious nature of the material, so visit their website for more info. You can also tune in for more eye candy by following them on Instagram and TikTok.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome in the U.S each year. Although the outlook for people with this condition has improved drastically over the last few decades, the assumptions around what they can and can't do continue to hamper their quality of life. To challenge these ideas, Coor Down, an Italian Down syndrome organization, launched a campaign titled “Assume That I Can” ahead of World Down Syndrome Awareness Day.

The pillar of this campaign is an ad starring Canadian actress Madison Tevlin. In the video, the 22-year-old addresses the camera, asking people in her life, from a bartender to her own parents, why they think she can't do certain things, like ordering a margarita or learning Shakespeare.

“Your assumption becomes reality,” Tevlin says, before exemplifying how. As an example, she posits that if her boxing coach assumes she can't hit harder, he won't train her to hit harder, and ultimately she won't hit harder—a vision that drips down to all other aspects of herself, and furthers the infantilization of people with Down syndrome.

“But hey!” she later interjects. “If your assumptions become reality, then assume I can drink a margarita. So you serve me a margarita, so I drink a margarita.” She goes on to list other activities like living on her own, having a job, and having sex. “Assume that I can, so maybe I will,” the spot concludes.

According to the National Down Syndrome Society, all people with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, but the effect is “mild to moderate” and not indicative of the many strengths and talents that each individual possesses. They write, “People with Down syndrome attend school, work, participate in decisions that affect them, have meaningful relationships, vote, and contribute to society in many wonderful ways.”

Aiming to spotlight all the things people with Down syndrome can do, Coor Down also created shorter spots they've been sharing on Instagram. The clips show people with Down syndrome performing a myriad of activities, from surfing to running their own businesses. “This campaign was also born from listening to the people we represent,” says Antonella Falugiani, president of CoorDown ODV. “15 years after the ratification of the UN convention, their stories and experiences highlight how many prejudices and preconceptions limit and, sometimes, prevent people with Down syndrome from asserting themselves and achieving their dreams.”

Tevlin herself knows how these assumptions can hurt, having dealt with them her whole life. “When I was born, the doctor told my mom and dad that life would be really hard for me, saying that I can’t talk, or walk, or dance, or model, or act—or drinking or getting married—any of this stuff that’s part of normal life, and it’s so much fun proving people wrong.” she told CNN. “I always say that I have Down syndrome, and it’s the least interesting thing about me. The part of who I am, well it’s not all of me. We should all celebrate our differences in our own special and unique ways.”

To challenge the ideas around people with Down syndrome, Coor Down launched a campaign titled “Assume That I Can” ahead of World Down Syndrome Awareness Day.

Barbie Global Storytellers role models featuring Shania Twain and Viola Davis

Over the last few years, Mattel has paid tribute to female trailblazers by creating a Barbie dolls with their likeness. Now, to celebrate Barbie's 65th anniversary, they've decided to put the spotlight on eight inspiring women from around the world. These global storytellers thrive in different fields but have one thing in common—they've fearlessly fought for their dreams and are inspiring new generations and audiences to do the same.

Inspired by their mission of sharing countless stories of empowerment, the eight icons also speak to the 250+ professions Barbie has had in her six-decade-run. The women selected for this celebration are American EGOT-winning actress Viola Davis, Canadian singer Shania Twain, British actress Dame Helen Mirren, Australian singer Kylie Minogue, Brazilian Indigenous vlogger Maira Gomez, Mexican film director Lila Avilés, Japanese model Nicole Fujita, and German comedian Enissa Amani.

“As a young girl, I was inspired by the essence of Barbie to create my own imaginative world and express myself through role play and storytelling,” said Shania Twain. “I applaud Barbie for encouraging girls to create their own narratives and I'm honored to serve as a storyteller and role model during their 65th anniversary year. I hope other young girls are inspired to play out their dreams and recognize their limitless potential.”

Meanwhile, Viola Davis said that she wanted this Barbie to make her 6-year-old self squeal. “It's my biggest gift to her,” commented the actress in a statement shared on her Instagram. “My lifelong mission and legacy to make her feel pretty, seen, and worthy.” Her Barbie's outfit is a nod to her 2018 Golden Globes look, where she took the red carpet by storm by rocking her natural hair in an afro, along with a timeless black gown and a pearl necklace.

Helen Mirren's doll also pays tribute to a striking red carpet look. In spring 2023, the actress—who also served as the voice of the narrator in the Barbie movie—dazzled the audience at the Cannes Film Festival by showing up in a head-to-toe monochromatic outfit, which included a bright blue hairdo.

Barbie and the honorees know the arts and performance is not all about glamour though. And so, Lila Áviles' doll depicts her with her camera in hand, ready to tell a poignant story from behind the lens. She talked to Spanish newspaper El País about the experience of being being turned into a Barbie: “I got the invitation and it was crazy. Just imagine, last year they gave it to an astronaut! I must confess that I was moved.”

Driving over frozen bodies of water are always impressive feats, due to the skill and care needed to cross ice. In cold conditions, people have also gotten good at switching out their tires to match the frozen ground. But recently, a YouTube channel decided to swap out their dirt bike tires for an unusual replacement—saw blades.

CboysTV is a popular YouTube channel with approximately 3.25 million subscribers. Most of their videos involve modifying vehicles in new and inventive ways to see what is possible, or doing wild stunts with existing motorcycles and cars. Their latest invention features a bright red Honda dirt bike with circular saw blades instead of tires. In a previous video, they already rode a dirt bike over a frozen lake, but they seem to have wanted a new challenge, which inspired them to remove tires from the equation entirely.

Surprisingly, the blades double incredibly well as wheels, allowing the rider to drive across the lake and turn with ease. Later on in the video, they trade the icy terrain for the traditional dirt of a course, and the bike does equally well here. It's effective but also extremely dangerous, as falling off of the bike could have more severe consequences for the rider. Still, it is a thoroughly entertaining watch and an impressive feat of engineering.

Some of CboysTV other inventions include installing a set of wheels on a jet ski, creating a 6-foot-tall dirt bike, and building the world's fastest toilet (yes, you read that correctly). You can watch the rest of their videos on their YouTube channel.

The creative team at CboysTV recently posted a video where they swapped out of the wheels on a dirt bike for circular saw blades.

This selection offers nine different designs that range from blooming botanicals and hearty vegetation to tropical foliage and plants that thrive in the heart of the desert. If you enjoy the soothing aesthetic plants provide and want access to flourishing indoor greenery, you are in luck. These tiny but mighty compositions made of sustainably sourced plant-based materials will thrive in any setting. LEGO has provided the ideal opportunity for adults to engage in a low-maintenance project that transforms any space into a picture-perfect greenhouse.

Bright, vibrant pigments comprise the uniquely shaped leaves of each flower. Their finely crafted details mimic a zen-enhancing version of perfectly manicured foliage. Each potted plant is carefully designed to provide varying heights, textures, and colors, coming together to create a serene, relaxing atmosphere wherever you choose to display your indoor LEGO garden.

An intriguing design element of this set is the variety of geometric shapes used to create the essence of flowers in the natural world. The curved exterior of the terracotta juxtaposed with the pointed petals of each flower present wonderfully creative depictions of nature reproduced in a different context. And the set includes everything from tropical to desert plants. There's even the carnivorous Venus flytrap.

Photographer Ansel Adams thrived at capturing the majestic beauty of American landscapes. By working in black and white, he developed a unique visual language that conveyed both the details of the environment and the feelings of awe they sparked in him. As a tribute to his work behind the lens, the USPS will release a stamp collection featuring 16 images taken by the iconic landscape photographer.

“Ansel Adams made a career of crafting photographs in exquisitely sharp focus and nearly infinite tonality and detail,” writes the USPS. “His ability to consistently visualize a subject—not how it looked in reality but how it felt to him emotionally—led to some of the most famous images of America’s natural treasures including Half Dome in California’s Yosemite Valley, the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, and Denali in Alaska, the highest peak in the United States.”

Designed by art director Derry Noyes, the Ansel Adams USPS collection is being issued as Forever stamps. Each one will feature a single black and white image, such as Half Dome, Merced River, Winter, Yosemite National Park, California (1938); Tetons and Snake River, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming (1942); The Golden Gate and Bridge from Baker Beach, San Francisco, California (c.1953); and Dunes, Oceano, California (1963).

“As evidenced by the striking images in this collection, Adams devoted much of his career to the advancement of photography as a fine art,” the USPS continues. “He wrote and photographed extensively for the Sierra Club Bulletin, exhibited his prints at museums across the country, gave lectures on photography’s artistic merit, taught thousands of students in workshops, and helped create the first museum photography department, at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.”

The series will debut on May 15, 2024, with an opening-day ceremony in Yosemite National Park, a place Adams had a such deep connection to that one of its peaks was renamed “Mount Ansel Adams” a year after his passing. While there has been no announcement made regarding a pre-order, you can stay up to date with this release by visiting the USPS' website.
